"I am SPIRITUAL but not RELIGIOUS". Most of nowadays youngsters are saying this. Can anyone explain whait it means.
Meditation calms our mind and cleanses out breath.
Spirituality
Meditation takes us a step closer to God.
Religious
What I infer from this is, "I think of God and pray to God or a Force but do not necessarily show it out explicitly by doing pooja or visiting temples regularly or by keeping a figurine or a picture of god with me"
It is said- Religion ends where Spirituality begins. Religion is the peel of the Plantain fruit and Spirituality is the fruit inside.
IN RAJAYOGA THEY PREACH TO MEDITATE ON CERTAIN VERSES BUT NOT ON ANY SPECIFIC GOD IT IS SPIRITUAL BUT NOT RELIGIOUS!
I am spiritual therefore I am a Hindu
I don't know.I think it is latest fashion.ikkes
Vijay Kutti I also thought close to this only..... may be it is the fashion of today's generation.
Spirituals is inner mind but religious is outside to worship god through our mind.Only the difference is green stick cracking. As a whole same and we cannot separate from spiritual and religious
I have asked this question to myself several times in my life....... Is it possible to be "SPIRITUAL" without being "RELIGIOUS". Religious does not mean going to temples regularly or wearing very big big, Biguthu pattai or Naam pattai. It can be just thinking about the supreme God, say Lord Krishna in my case..... it can be any other like Shiva or Shakti ...etc., for others.
If being religious we pray one god if it is spiritual we can understand what is god
But why are people flocking to temples and calling themselves religious? They go to temples and ask for a 100 things, like prosperity, more wealth etc., and if it is granted, that temple becomes famous and people stand in queue ...... special darshan tickets like Rs.100, Rs.500, 1000 etc., are introduced...... so is religion only a bargain with God?
Karthick Subramanian I really doubt you statement....... "if spiritual we can understand God" ........ Srimad bhagavata puranam says that even Lord Brahma Deva who has created our world and its beings has not understood that Supreme God Para Brahman who has created this Universe.
Mentally got disturbed by our peoples right from the birth.
Sriman nadana gopala nayaki swami ji told how to reach the origin through spirituality but
Our society simple made a temple and made that swami ji as statue
the one who does not know the meaning of spirituality - will say this - am spiritual not religious - religion is like mother and spiritual is like dad. more.........
Karthick Subramanian YOu are absolutely right..... nobody has understood the great saying of Shriman Natana Gopala Nayaki swamigal.
Can anyone other than hindu be spiritual?
I think Buddhism preaches a lot of spirituality Vijay Kutti
A person who is religious need not be spiritual.. that is.. a person may be a stron follower of his religion may b praying at temples every other day may be following all rites and rituals perfectly.. but that doesn't mean he/she s spiritual.. when one goes beyond the physical form of God and is able to connect with the force that is God.. the force inside himself he/she does not need temples or rituals... he/she will be able to see the reason for all the rituals and understand it while doing it... rather than just following it blindly cause that's how it's done etc...
People think that just avoiding physical worship and plainly believing in a single supreme force is spirituality... but it's not... spirituality is a connection and a feeling... it is an overall understanding and acceptance...
This is my idea... I may be wrong..
Harini Priyadharshini I just checked your profile to see how old you are...... hats off to you....... you seem to be much more philosophical for your age...... thanks for opening your heart and telling.
A religious person has belief system in mind, believing a god...
A spiritual person tries to enter into unknown, without belief system, and arrives at a point where parabrahamam is unknowable...that point is spiritual enlightenment
Ramdoss As I hope you would have read "Brahma sutra"..... the first verse says... "athatho Brahma gnignaasa"....... after that and after that only one come to enquire about Brahman........ after that means..... after completely learning about all the rituals. So there is no way a person can go straight to inquire about Brahman.
but I think buddhism has no rituals or very less rituals, they accept any individual as disciple, and assist him inquire about Brahman or enlightenment (by whatever name called meaning same enlightenment), by starting practice meditation Ravindranath Kondda Rajaram dha
I have not read brahma sutra anyhow, but got its initial concept through your comment
//I am spiritual but not Religious// .......- I think it means " I believe in God and have a Self realisation of his infiniteness but i dont believe him to be in a particular form (any form makes him finite) or restricted to any particular path, dogma or principle to attain him!
Even in buddhism the journey towards enlightenment is very very long.
I was talking to a buddhist monk, a few years back,at Tibetan buddhist school Kushalnagar karnataka, he told that after a buddhist monk learnt Vajrayana, a profoujd buddhist tantra, it will take 16 rebirths to become enlightenment
Why 16 rebirths for enlightenment? Buddha understood what karma is and accepted the world. He got enlightened. Aghoris leave behind all luxuries and accept simple way of life. They see everything equally. They get mukthi. Why take the longer route when these loop holes are present
16 rebirths ..that too after you renounce materialistic life become a spiritual buddhist monk learnt vajrayana Vijay Prithiv
// why 16 rebirths for enlightenment // enlightenment means freedom, freedom from karma, freedom trom destiny, freedom from worries...such freedom from karma will happen only after experiencing karma both bad and good, to experience karma you need many many rebirths...
not only that you need grace of enlightened mystics
there are no loop holes, gautham buddha underwent many many rebirth process during spiritual sadhana before becoming a buddha
Spirituality - is the search for the meaning of existence, the purpose of and value in life.
A person does not have to be religious to be spiritual!
religion is GIVEN to u, u r a born hindu, you were born to a hindu father & mother, later you may shift your religion because of allurement - even then your religious identity never goes. you have 2 fold ignorance by birth, but you shed your ignorance day by day world ignorance
later because of knowledge gained from mom, dad, teacher, friends & environment your world ignorance goes gradually, but ignorance about YOURSELF will go when you understand & sit under a master for a length of time is makes u a spiritual person, ones u gained the knowledge un shaken then you are a wise person.
Spirituality is the inquiry into the nature of Oneself leading to the discovery of the Truth of Oneself. The purpose of Dharma (ethical living which may or may not include a belief in a personal god) is to give the individual the necessary preparation- emotional maturity and conviction to undertake the spiritual journey. I used the word Dharma instead of Religion because Religion implies faith in a Creator/Personal God. Jainism, Buddhism and Sankhya philosophies do not have a creator or a personal God. Even in Advaita Vedanta Ishvara is only relatively true but ultimately false. (this requires a very long explanation which I am not going to get into here).
Finally, a person can be highly ethical and many secular humanists are (many in Western Europe and somewhat less in US) are just that. At the same time they could be sincere spiritual seekers spending decades in meditation and inquiring into the nature of Self (Consciousness). Sam Harris, Eckhart Tolle, J. Krishnamurti are just a few examples.
